Criterion B  Strand 4 - Planning drawings

iv. develop accurate and detailed planning drawings/diagrams and outline the requirements for the creation of the chosen solution.

How to do strand 4

This strand addresses two Command Terms (Develop and outline).

Once you have fully developed your idea into a final solution you are ready to create the planning drawings and diagrams.  There are many different ways this can be done.  You may decide to produce a range of drawings using the drawing boards.  You could produce:

Orthographic drawings - to show the different angles of the design and the dimensions.  Notice how the designer has provided enough dimensions to enable someone to manufacture the keytag.

Isometric Drawings - to show what the product will look like in 3D (top right view of the bracket shows the isometric (3D pictorial view)

Sectional View - a sectional view shows what an object looks like inside, as if it has been sliced along a plane.  The sectional view at the bottom right hand side shows the internal properties of the bracket.

Exploded drawings  - to show what all the individual parts will look like  as separate components.

You could also create a list of the equipment required to create your prototype.  For example you may list things like:

Laser cutter - for cutting out the acrylic and plywood sections of my design

3D printer - for creating the plastic end stops for my table legs

Hacksaw - for cutting the aluminium bar to the correct length.

Another good thing to do (depending on your design) is to create a parts list or bill of materials, outlining all the components, their material and how many parts are required.  You could also outline whether you need any standard components, or if the parts need to be a specific size (dimensions).
