Criterion B  Strand 2 - Generate Initial Ideas

ii. develop a range of feasible design ideas which can be correctly interpreted by others

How to do strand 2

This is the part of the design process where you get to show off your creative skills!  You should use this strand to communicate your design ideas.  You may choose from a range of communication techniques including freehand sketches, google sketchup models, simple models made using card or plasticine.  However you decide to communicate your ideas, the process should be quick and allow you to generate lots of different ideas.  New designers often have one idea in their head from the start of the project.  To be a good designer you need to try and generate a range of different ideas which could all solve the problem.

The ideas need to be feasible (achievable) meaning that you must be able to create them (not too difficult or complicated), they must also meet the requirements of the specification so make sure you have it to hand when coming up with your ideas.

You should employ a suitable idea generation technique to help you to generate good ideas.

This strand addresses one Command Term (Develop)

"Develop is to improve incrementally, elaborate or expand in detail.  Or Evolve to a more advanced state." (We will develop the ideas later in the folio)

You should also annotate your ideas to make them easy to understand.  See the examples below on how you could communicate your design ideas.

This video is an excellent introduction to sketching and rendering and gives some great examples of how to improve your presentation techniques in your design folio.

extra information on generating ideas

criterion B strand 2 checklist

You have generated a range of ideas which are diverse (different from each other)

You have used plenty of annotation to clearly explain your ideas

Your ideas are feasible (achievable) and address the requirements outlined in the specifications (if they don't meet them all then state why and how you could develop the ideas.
